98th Academy Awards Nominations: Surprises, and Snubs

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 98th Academy Awards, led by Sinners with a record‑setting 16 nominations and featuring major contenders such as One Battle After Another, Hamnet, Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value across key categories including Best Picture, acting, and directing.

Leading the nominations is Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which received 16 nods, the most of any film this year. It earned nominations for Best Picture and Best Director, with Michael B. Jordan nominated for Best Actor, Wunmi Mosaku for Best Supporting Actress, and Delroy Lindo for Best Supporting Actor. Sinners also earned nominations in Original Screenplay and Casting, as well as Production Design, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound, Visual Effects, Original Score, Original Song for “I Lied to You”, and Cinematography. Cinematographer Rachel Morrison becomes the first woman of color nominated in the category, while costume designer Ruth Carter became the most-nominated Black woman in Oscar history.

The acting categories also feature a mix of familiar faces and first-time nominees. Best Supporting Actress includes Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value), Amy Madigan (Weapons), Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), and Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another). Best Supporting Actor nominees are Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Delroy Lindo, Sean Penn, and Stellan Skarsgård. In the lead categories, Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, Michael B. Jordan, and Wagner Moura are up for Best Actor, while Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Renate Reinsve, and Emma Stone are nominated for Best Actress. There were also some surprising snubs this year. Wicked: For Good didn’t receive any nominations, even though it was expected to contend in major categories. Avatar: Fire and Ash missed out on Best Picture, earning only technical nominations. Paul Mescal, who had been praised for his role in Hamnet, was not nominated in the acting categories.
