I had the pleasure of seeing Beyoncé for the second time on September 11th, 2024 when she performed in Vancouver for the Renaissance world tour.

What I love most about Beyoncé is her unparalleled work ethic. In the film, she opens up about the unique challenges that Black women face when placed in leadership positions. As an artist and visionary, Beyoncé took it upon herself to master every aspect of production, from engineering and sound design to lighting. She made sure she understood the terminology and how each piece of equipment was used, ensuring she was involved in every detail. Not only did Beyoncé spend years perfecting her craft as a musician, but as a Black woman in the music industry, it was crucial for her to understand every aspect of what happens behind the scenes.Throughout the film, we witness Beyoncé being gaslit and spoken to condescendingly. It made me wonder, how many women of color face these same challenges and microaggressions on a daily basis? Beyoncé’s experiences are far from unique, and her ability to navigate these obstacles speaks volumes about her resilience and determination.
The Renaissance production itself took four years to bring to life, and Beyoncé’s explanation of the process was beautifully done. Throughout the film, she continually uplifts her staff and crew members, emphasizing collaboration and mutual respect. We see dancers, singers, and performers of all body shapes and diverse backgrounds lighting up the stage with their exceptional talent. The film shares their personal journeys, showing the power of inclusivity in artistry. For any artist struggling to stay true to their vision, Renaissance serves as a powerful reminder to keep pushing forward. It also emphasizes the importance of learning how to finance and support yourself as an independent artist. I hope everyone takes a moment to see this film. It’s safe to say, Beyoncé is more than just a performer, she’s a visionary, a leader, and a trailblazer for artists everywhere.
