As consumers, it’s important to know that our dollar is our power. When it comes to huge brands in the fashion and beauty industry, it’s up to us to carefully choose companies that align with our ethics and morals. Supermodel Iman, recently told a story during a radio interview about her experience with Phoebe Philo; fashion designer and creative director for Céline. Phoebe made controversial remarks about not wanting to use black models for her runway shows unless she’s forced to. During the interview, Iman explained there was a time that every woman would purchase Céline bags. However, after her encounter with Philo, she decided to never own a Céline bag, despite the brand’s popularity. Iman realized Philo may choose to only hire white models for her shows but Iman will always have the right to her pocketbook.
Iman’s Stand Against Céline
During the Black Lives Matter protests in June 2020, Céline posted a black square on its Instagram page, supposedly standing in solidarity with the community. However, many fashion insiders, including celebrity stylist Jason Bolden (who has worked with stars like Angelina Jolie, Cynthia Erivo, and Nicole Kidman) claimed that the brand didn’t dress Black celebrities unless they had a white stylist. This raised concerns about performative activism, with critics questioning the brand’s true commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The Balenciaga Controversy
Fast forward to 2022, and Balenciaga stirred even more controversy with its disturbing campaign involving children, prompting many to ask: Why do so many celebrities continue to support this brand? The question of whether such brands truly value ethics or just the celebrity endorsements remains an ongoing discussion.
The Karl Lagerfeld Debate
Karl Lagerfeld, the late creative director for Chanel, also remains a contentious figure in the fashion world. Despite his legendary status, Lagerfeld’s history of making sexist, racist, and derogatory statements, especially about plus size women and immigrants, has raised serious concerns about his legacy. In 2018, he made disturbing comments about the Me Too movement, further fueling the debate. Yet, at the 2023 Met Gala, Lagerfeld was celebrated, with numerous celebrities wearing his designs, seemingly overlooking his past controversies.
The Alexander Wang Allegations
In 2021, fashion designer Alexander Wang faced multiple accusations of sexual assault from models in the industry. Despite the allegations, Wang’s brand, which generates $200 million annually, continues to thrive. His recent ad campaigns featuring iconic supermodels only add to the question of how the fashion world continues to support such figures. Wang responded to the allegations by claiming he listened to his accusers, but denied the accusations.
It’s up to us, as consumers, to recognize the power of our dollar and who we support.
